Understanding the vast varieties of koi fish can be quite overwhelming and make your head spin, so lets have a bit of background.

The origins of the name ‘Koi’ has roots in Japan. In Japanese, “Nishiki” describes a colored cloth and “Goior Koi” means carp. Fusing those two words together, “Nishikigoi” had come to resemble colored carp.

With the popularity of koi keeping around the world, over time people have come to favor “Koi” to define the species.

It helps to view the koi in a basic genealogy tree.
